Neutral lips were all over the FW14 runways (Versace, Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, Tom Ford, to name a few) and are a must-try makeup trend for this fall season.
That said, not all nudes are created equal—it’s important to find one that flatters your skin tone and coloring. “Most people’s lips need a blend of pink and gold in a lipstick color to reproduce the neutral, natural effect,” says makeup artist Landy Dean. “Take a look at the color of the inside of your lower lip as a guide for finding the perfect lipstick color. When applied, it should blend in seamlessly with the color just inside your natural lips.” Landy says that you can vary the intensity of the lip product from sheer to more color, but the basic undertone should remain the same. Additionally, avoid colors that are too brown or bluish as “they can look drab and not as ‘happy’ as a peachy, pink undertone.”
So which neutral lip colors are some of Landy’s favorites? “I really love Dolce Vita by NARS. It’s a beautifully natural pinkish tone that comes in a gloss, sheer lipstick, and a velvet matte pencil form.” Some of his other neutral makeup picks include Vincent Longo Baci XXX gloss, MAC Fulfilled Plushglass using MAC Subculture pencil, and Hourglass Grace lipstick.
