THE NEW OMBRE HAIR

Olivia-Wilde-Ombre-Hair.jpg

Ombre hair was all the rage circa 2011, sprucing up the tresses of many a Hollywood starlet, from Jessica Biel to Rachel Bilson. But fashion and beauty pundits agree that the hair color trend is now in steady decline. Or is it?

Marie Robinson Salon celebrity colorist Nikki Ferrara shares that one of the most popular hair color requests she’s received this season is a look that she calls “shaded highlights”—a reformed, more sophisticated version of ombre that’s making big waves this fall.

“The base of the highlights start deeper and then fade out into a lighter shade, making less of a harsh contrast between the natural base and highlight color,” explains Nikki. One can achieve it by having a deeper gloss color applied at the root, while the ends of the hair are left out.

So why are so many women drawn to this look? The answer is simple: easy maintenance. “It gives women the appearance of a lighter base color without the commitment of doing a single process every 4-5 weeks. It’ll just seem like the highlights are grown out, while still maintaining a natural look.”

Nikki believes this look works best on women with hair ranging from medium to dark brunette. “It gives a dimensional, richer brown through the root and fading into a deep amber to medium hone tone through the ends.” And who is her favorite celebrity currently sporting this new ombre look? None other than her client Olivia Wilde, of course!

GET THE PURR-FECT CAT EYE

It all begins with an idea.

Nothing looks chicer than a perfectly executed cat eye. While it’s a look that may seem daunting to a newbie, the following makeup tips prove it’s actually quite simple to do. Makeup artist Joette Balsamo suggests following these 5 easy steps and within no time, you’ll be flicking up your eyeliner like a pro.

  1. Apply an eyeshadow primer to the entire lid in a light skin colored tone, followed by a light pastel shadow in a beige or cool tone. Light, neutral pastel shadows offset the hard lines of the cat eye and keep it looking feminine.

  1. For beginners, start off with a black pencil to create a “base-line” along the upper lash line. Pencil is easier to control than liquid and mistakes can be blended out. Glide the pencil along the upper lash line from inner corner to outer widening as you go.

  1. Now that you have a solid base, you can define and create the flick over it with a liquid liner pen or a cream liner with a pointed brush.

  1. Place your finger at the end of the eyebrow and trace it down towards end of your eye. This is where your upward “flick” should start. With your pen or liner brush draw a line stemming out from your base line. Now, draw a line from the top of that towards the base line.

  1. Connect your flicks to the base line by gliding the pen or brush along the lash line.

REPLENISH SUMMER-DAMAGED HAIR

It all begins with an idea.

As we enter fall and reminisce about summer days spent at the beach, outdoor festivals, poolside, etc., many of us may have one very unpleasant reminder of those otherwise very pleasant days: damaged hair. While we enjoy the beautiful weather and all that the season has to offer, summer’s harsh elements unfortunately can wreak havoc on our locks. Thankfully, stylist Jessica Gillin has an arsenal of helpful hair tips to get those strands back into shape.

First and foremost? Get a trim! “Hair is dry from the sun, ocean, and pool. Getting rid of the split ends that come as a result of that exposure will lead to healthy hair and prevent further damage from happening,” says Jessica.

For those of us who have blonde or lighter brown hair, you might be left with the dreaded green hue to your otherwise gorgeous color. “Hair can get a greenish tint from chlorine, and well water that is typical in vacation homes can also turn hair green. Most salons offer treatments to strip out the green. Ours is called a ‘pre-art’ treatment and entails sitting for 10 to 30 minutes under heat with the treatment in your hair. Afterwards, during the shampoo, your hair will be rung out like a towel and you can actually see all of the green coming out!”

Last but certainly not least, condition, condition, condition! “Investing in a good treatment is a wise way to get your hair back into shape. Oribe’s signature moisture masque is an amazing weekly treatment. Keratin and hydrolyzed keratin strengthen damaged hair and protect the surface. Together they penetrate the hair cortex to maintain strength and prevent further UV damage.”

GO NUDE THIS FALL

It all begins with an idea.

Neutral lips were all over the FW14 runways (Versace, Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, Tom Ford, to name a few) and are a must-try makeup trend for this fall season.

That said, not all nudes are created equal—it’s important to find one that flatters your skin tone and coloring. “Most people’s lips need a blend of pink and gold in a lipstick color to reproduce the neutral, natural effect,” says makeup artist Landy Dean. “Take a look at the color of the inside of your lower lip as a guide for finding the perfect lipstick color. When applied, it should blend in seamlessly with the color just inside your natural lips.” Landy says that you can vary the intensity of the lip product from sheer to more color, but the basic undertone should remain the same. Additionally, avoid colors that are too brown or bluish as “they can look drab and not as ‘happy’ as a peachy, pink undertone.”

So which neutral lip colors are some of Landy’s favorites? “I really love Dolce Vita by NARS. It’s a beautifully natural pinkish tone that comes in a gloss, sheer lipstick, and a velvet matte pencil form.” Some of his other neutral makeup picks include Vincent Longo Baci XXX gloss, MAC Fulfilled Plushglass using MAC Subculture pencil, and Hourglass Grace lipstick.

MIDDLE PART HAIRSTYLES

It all begins with an idea.

Center parts are making a comeback for fall in a big way. Seen on the runways of Chanel, Valentino, and Balenciaga, among others, this is definitely a trend that’s easy to incorporate into your daily hair routine. But depending on your current cut, each of us may have to approach it a bit differently.

Hair stylist Vanessa Alcala says that if you have bangs “they should be grown to at least the bottom of your eye,” before you split them down the middle. “Use a round brush and blow dry the bangs back from the face so that they have a soft bend at the end.” Additionally, Vanessa suggests applying Oribe gel serum while the bangs are still wet in order for them to hold the bend.

“Keeping hair sleek and straight with the middle part is ideal for cuts that have minimum to no layers. Apply Oribe Soft Lacquer to hair and then follow by using a flatiron to smooth locks out.”

If you like to keep your hair wavy, “a middle part with soft waves looks great on most face shapes, especially square faces and those with pointy features.”  Vanessa suggests using a texture spray to keep your waves looking effortlessly chic.

“No matter what your hair style is, keep in mind that the part doesn’t have to be perfect!” Have fun with this look and make it your own.
